Why Your Bra Underwire Pokes Out After Only 3 Months (And How to Prevent It)

July 5, 2026Eleonore Fleurantin

It's the nightmare scenario we all know. You've finally found a bra you like and feel good in, it's become your favorite... and then one morning, a metal wire pokes you in the armpit or décolletage. The underwire has poked through the fabric again.

Besides being particularly painful, it's a real waste of money. So, why do your bras give up the ghost so quickly? Spoiler: it's not necessarily inevitable, and it's not always the product's fault.

Here are the 3 real reasons why your underwires escape, and our advice to make sure it never happens again.

1. You're probably not wearing the right size (Yes, really!)

This is the number one cause, and it often surprises people. If your bra is too small, and particularly if the cup is too small, the fabric is under constant and abnormal tension.

  • What's happening behind the scenes: When the cup is too small, your breasts push the underwire outwards. With every movement, the metal rubs forcefully against the fabric at the ends. After a few weeks, the fabric wears out, thins, and the underwire eventually pokes through its casing.

  • The solution: Take your measurements and use my size calculator to find your true size. If the underwire doesn't lie flat against your sternum or rests on breast tissue on the sides, then the size is not right.

2. Washing machine and tumble dryer: the enemies of lingerie

We're all in a hurry, and the "pop it in the machine with the rest of the laundry" option is tempting. However, it's the fastest way to kill your lingerie in 90 days flat.

  • The machine problem: The washing machine drum twists and stretches the bra in all directions. The metal underwire (which doesn't bend) forces against the stretch fabric.

  • The worst enemy (The tumble dryer): The intense heat of the tumble dryer literally bakes the elastane fibers and weakens the casing that holds the underwire. Once the fabric is weakened, the metal pokes through at the slightest opportunity.

  • The solution: Hand wash whenever possible. If the machine is essential, always use a suitable laundry bag, a delicate cold cycle (30°C max), and banish the tumble dryer forever.

3. The "rotation" trap (You wear the same one too often)

We all have that favorite bra we want to wear every day because it creates an amazing silhouette. But lingerie needs a break!

  • Why it breaks: The elastic fibers of a bra need 24 to 48 hours to return to their original shape after being stretched and heated by your body. If you wear it two days in a row, the fabric permanently relaxes, the underwires move out of alignment, and eventually cut through the fabric.

  • The solution: Alternate! Give your bra at least one day of rest between uses to extend its lifespan by several months (or even years).

💡 Bonus tip: Can you repair a bra that pokes through?

If the fabric is already pierced, pushing the underwire back in and making a simple stitch will only last a few days. The tension is too strong. For a real emergency repair, you need to insert a small piece of ultra-strong textile adhesive tape (like moleskin) or a thick piece of fabric inside the casing before securely stitching it with a bar tack.

In summary: How to make your bras last longer than 3 months?

What to stop doing ❌ What to start doing ✅
Wearing a cup that's too small Checking your size every year
Throwing your bra loosely in the drum Using a laundry bag and a delicate cycle
Putting your lingerie in the dryer Drying flat, in the open air
Wearing the same style 3 days in a row Alternating between several bras

Investing in beautiful lingerie also means learning to pamper it. By adopting these few habits, you'll see that your bras will thank you, and so will your wallet!
